The Government keeps an open mind towards proposals for establishing open-air bazaars, raising no objection to an application to organise one in Sham Shui Po which has the support of the District Council, Secretary for Health & Welfare Dr Ko Wing-man says.
He told legislators today if the licensing requirements of the Letter of Requirements issued to the applicant on June 7 are confirmed, it will be issued the requisite licence to organise the bazaar in Kiu Kiang Street from June to October.
"The Government will render assistance to development proposals as long as they will not jeopardise food safety and environmental hygiene or obstruct public access, and provided that suitable sites can be located by the organisations concerned and that support from local communities and respective district councils is obtained," he said.
Meanwhile, a working group formed by the Island District Council to promote bazaar development held its first meeting in April to follow up on related proposals.
The bureau will keep in touch with the district councils concerned to take forward the proposals, Dr Ko said.
