Museum entry plan gazetted

May 20, 2016

The Government today gazetted an amendment regulation to allow free admission to permanent exhibitions at designated museums.

Under the arrangement, permanent exhibitions at the Museum of Art, Museum of History, Heritage Museum, Museum of Coastal Defence and the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum, which are under the Leisure & Cultural Services Department, will open for free.

Permanent exhibitions at the Science Museum and the Space Museum will offer free admission to students.

To complement the free admission initiative, admission fees for permanent exhibitions in the Science Museum will be cut 20%. The new fees for standard, group and concessionary tickets will be $20, $14 and $10.

The price of annual museum passes will be reduced by 50%, with the revised charges for standard, concessionary and family passes set at $50, $25 and $100.

Subject to the passage of the amendment regulation within this legislative session, the new fees will come into effect on August 1.

The Government said the initiative will help enrich Hong Kong people's cultural life and make museum visits more accessible to all people.

The Museum of Art and the Space Museum permanent exhibition halls are under renovation. They will reopen in 2019 and late 2016.

The regulation will be tabled at the Legislative Council on May 25.
