The Centre for Health Protection is monitoring the first Middle East Respiratory Syndrome case reported to the World Health Organisation by Bahrain.
A 61-year-old man from Saudi Arabia was admitted to a healthcare facility in Bahrain on March 29 for an unrelated medical condition. He developed symptoms on April 4 while still at the facility and tested positive for MERS five days later.
He was transferred to a hospital in Saudi Arabia on April 12 and died that day.
The man owned a camel barn and had consumed the animal's raw milk.
To date, 1,725 cases have been reported to the WHO globally, including at least 624 deaths.
The centre urged travellers to the Middle East not to go to farms, barns or markets with camels and to avoid unnecessary visits to healthcare facilities.
