More human Zika infection reported

April 22, 2016

In view of the World Health Organisation's report of person-to-person Zika virus transmission in Peru and Portugal recently, the Department of Health today called on people to ensure strict anti-mosquito measures and safe sex during travel.

Sixty-six countries and areas have documented Zika virus transmissions since 2007.

The report said Zika is a cause of microcephaly, Guillain-Barre syndrome and other central nervous system foetal malformations.

The department called on pregnant women and those planning pregnancy to defer trips to affected areas.
