Boy with severe flu dies

March 02, 2016

The Centre for Health Protection has announced a fatal case of severe paediatric influenza B involving a six-year-old boy.

The centre’s Controller Dr Leung Ting-hung told reporters tonight that the patient, who had an underlying illness, had developed a fever, cough and a runny nose since February 24 and later came down with abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea.

He was admitted to Tseung Kwan O Hospital on February 29 and died yesterday.

Clinical diagnosis was myocarditis and he tested positive for influenza B virus.

So far 10 cases including this case have been detected under the centre's routine surveillance for severe paediatric influenza-associated complications or deaths of children.

Dr Leung urged the public, particularly children, to stay vigilant, get vaccinated early, and maintain good personal and environmental hygiene.

Schools should check the body temperature of all students every day when they arrive at school, and those with fever should be told to seek medical advice and avoid school until two days after the fever subsides.
