Incorrect food labels found

March 01, 2016

The Centre for Food Safety has found that the nutrient contents of a smoked oyster sample and a cheese sample were inconsistent with the declared values on their nutrition labels.

The Smoked Oysters in Olive Oil product is from Korea, 85g pack, with an expiry date of March 18, 2018. A sample taken from a Tseung Kwan O supermarket was tested to have an actual total fat content of 30.3g per 100g, which was inconsistent with the declared content of 7g per 85g (i.e. 8.24g per 100g).

The cheese sample was HORIZON ORGANIC - organic AMERICAN SINGLES from the US, 12 slices pack, with an expiry date of April 9, 2016.

The centre found that the protein content of a sample of the cheese taken from a supermarket in Causeway Bay was inconsistent with its declared value.

It collected another cheese sample of the same kind but of a different batch from the same supermarket during follow-up investigations. The result showed the same irregularity, a discrepancy between the actual protein content (18.5g per 100g) and the declared content on its nutrition label (9g per slice (19g), i.e. 47.37g per 100g).

The centre has told the trade to stop selling the affected batches of the prepackaged products immediately.
