Anti-Zika measures set

February 03, 2016

The Government will implement measures to help prevent the Zika virus from entering Hong Kong.

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man discussed epidemic prevention measures at boundary control points with lawmakers today.

The measures include regular inspections at immigration control points by the Port Health Office to ensure good environmental hygiene is maintained and proper mosquito control measures are in place.

The Port Health Inspector will enhance training for cleaning and pest control contractors to ensure that vector control measures are effective.

Health promotion at control points will be enhanced through pamphlet distribution and poster displays reminding travellers of preventive measures against the virus.

Temperature checks will be conducted on an ongoing basis for all inbound travellers and suspected cases will be referred to medical institutions for follow-up.

The Department of Health will encourage tourists travelling from affected areas and Hong Kong residents returning from those places to apply mosquito repellent for two weeks after arrival in Hong Kong.

Dr Ko said the Government will closely monitor the latest developments overseas and maintain liaison with the World Health Organisation and health authorities on the Mainland and in neighbouring areas.

Local response and health surveillance will also be adjusted if necessary, he added.
