Health chief reviews district hygiene

February 01, 2016

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man has met with the chairmen and vice-chairmen of the new term of the District Council environmental hygiene committees to review the achievements made in the "Keep Clean 2015@ Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign last year.

They brought up issues of concern, including marine refuse, discrepancies in the performance of cleaning contractors, dog fouling, mosquitoes and rodent control, fly-tipping of construction waste, blocked drains, and hygiene conditions in back alleys outside restaurants.

They made numerous suggestions to the Government, including strengthening law enforcement, enhancing the frequency of cleaning operations, and installing cameras at hygiene blackspots.

Dr Ko said key environmental hygiene measures to be implemented this year include boosting mosquito prevention, increasing the number of street washing vehicles and frequency of street washing services, strengthening manpower to monitor the performance of cleaning contractors, increasing the frequency of operations to clean up marine refuse blackspots, marine parks and public beaches, as well as more vigorous action against fly-tipping.

As mosquitoes carry infectious diseases, including the Zika virus, Government departments will also intensify their mosquito control work.

Dr Ko added that the Government will carefully consider the views and suggestions raised at the meeting and review the effectiveness of environmental hygiene measures.
