The Science Museum’s latest thematic exhibition Out to Sea? The Plastic Garbage Project , to be held from tomorrow until February 17, showcases artworks made of plastic waste to explore how such waste is threatening the marine ecosystem.
Speaking at the opening ceremony today, Director of Leisure & Cultural Services Michelle Li said the exhibition aims to arouse public awareness of plastic pollution in the oceans.
She urged people to take small and simple changes in daily life to use plastic in a more environmentally conscious way.
The highlight exhibit, A Nightmare at Sea, is an installation consisting of plastic flotsam collected from beach cleaning operations in the North Sea, Hawaii, the Baltic Sea and elsewhere, symbolising the ecological catastrophe.
The exhibition also features Plastic in the Sea which shows the deadly impact of plastic on the seas, animals and human beings, while Plastic in Everyday Life introduces the chemical composition, classification and recycling processes of different plastic products and explores ways of minimising the disposal of plastic items.
