Drug abuse falls 8%

October 08, 2015

The total number of reported drug abusers fell 8% year-on-year to 5,310 in the first-half of the year, while the number of reported drug abusers aged under 21 dropped 14% to 425 people.

The latest figures from the Central Registry of Drug Abuse show drug use in Hong Kong continued to decline, particularly among young adults.

The number of new drug users, at 1,101, was close to that of the same period in 2014, at 1,102, while the number of under-21s becoming addicted to drugs fell 15% to 224.

Heroin is still the most commonly abused drug in Hong Kong, while ketamine is the most common psychotropic substance abused. Despite this, the number of heroin users fell 5% and ketamine users dropped 12%.

Action Committee Against Narcotics Chairman Dr Ben Cheung said today that despite the encouraging figures, the hidden drug abuse trend remains a cause for concern.

Commissioner for Narcotics Erika Hui said the Government will continue to raise awareness of the drug problem.
