Malachite green found in fish sample

August 29, 2015

Trace amounts of malachite green were found in two samples of tinned fried dace, the Centre for Food Safety says.

The affected products are “Yupin fried dace with salted blackbeans” and “Pearl River Bridge fried dace with salted black beans”.

The centre had collected six fresh dace samples and three tinned fried dace samples from different local retail outlets for analyses.

Results found malachite green at levels of 1.3 and 0.78 parts per billion in two samples of tinned fried dace taken from Wellcome Supermarkets at North Point and Sai Wan.

Malachite green, a type of industrial dye, is not allowed in food under Hong Kong law.

The centre has informed the supermarket chain of the irregularity and will consider taking prosecution action.

The supermarket has stopped selling the affected product.

The centre will also alert the trade and trace the source and distribution of the products.
