179 HIV cases reported

August 25, 2015

A total of 179 cases of HIV infection were reported in the second quarter of this year, the Centre for Health Protection announced today.

The newly diagnosed cases involve 155 males and 24 females, bringing the total reported HIV infections to 7,345 since 1984.

Of these cases, 100 involve infection through homosexual or bisexual contact, 32 through heterosexual contact, three through drug injection and one by mother-to-child transmission.

Thirty-one new AIDS cases were reported in the quarter, bringing the total number of confirmed cases since 1985 to 1,607.

The centre’s Special Preventive Programme consultant Dr Wong Ka-hing stressed the importance of proper condom use, noting sex remains the major HIV transmission mode in Hong Kong.

He also urged people with a history of unsafe sex to call 2780 2211 for a free, anonymous and confidential HIV test.
