Taiwan sandwich banned

August 03, 2015

The Centre for Food Safety today banned the import and sale of all Horng Ryen Jen sandwiches produced in Taiwan.

The ban was imposed after a number of food poisoning cases were suspected to be related to the product, which is imported from Taiwan.

The ban covers all batches and flavours, and wherever they are produced, to facilitate Taiwan's investigation and implementation of preventive measures.

The centre urged people not to consume the products, bring them to Hong Kong, or purchase them online.

The centre will liaise with Taiwan authorities and the local trade, and follow up on the incident.

The Centre for Health Protection meanwhile, has identified five more suspected food poisoning clusters, affecting six men and seven women who had eaten Horng Ryen Jen sandwiches.

The 13 patients, aged three to 69, fell ill after consuming the sandwiches which were ordered online, bought from exhibition booths in Wong Tai Sin, and from a supermarket in Tsim Sha Tsui from July 24 to 28.

Twelve sought medical help and two required hospitalisation.

As of 4pm today, a total of 15 clusters affecting 46 people have been identified. Among them, six have tested positive for Group D Salmonella.
