Elderly support to be reinforced

July 28, 2015

Support for senior citizens living at home will be reinforced, Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung said today.

Mr Cheung made the statement in response to an incident in which two old men were found dead in their home two days ago.

Speaking to reporters today, he said the bureau will reach out to the "hidden" elderly more and encourage them to use the Personal Emergency Link service.

His staff will also try to mobilise the local community to foster a good neighbourhood spirit with seniors.

In a reply to a reporter’s query on the US Department of State's Trafficking in Persons Report 2015, which was critical of Hong Kong, Mr Cheung said that it did not reflect the actual situation in Hong Kong.

He stressed that the city has a good record in terms of protecting the interests and well-being of foreign domestic helpers working here, such as prescribed standard employment contract, a mandatory employment contract, and minimum wage. They also enjoy full protection under Hong Kong labour laws.

The bureau will enforce the law strictly whenever abuse cases arise, he added.
