Clinical test:  Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man (centre) visits the University of Hong Kong clinical trial centre.

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man visited two Phase 1 clinical trial centres (CTC) today to inspect their equipment and operation, and learn about the future development of the local clinical trial sector.

Funded by the Government, the two centres were set up in 2011 in the medical faculties of Chinese University and the University of Hong Kong for conducting preliminary clinical trials on new drugs.

A total of $40 million was allocated to each of the two universities to support the operation of their respective CTCs in the first five years.

Dr Ko said the establishment of the centres enhances the capability of Hong Kong in new drug development and is conducive to the development of the local pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries.

The centres’ partnership with overseas academic institutions and the pharmaceutical industry in clinical research helps not only to boost the competitiveness of Hong Kong in drug research and development, but also to attract more overseas professionals to Hong Kong, he added.

More training and job opportunities for local professionals are also provided.

Dr Ko said he is pleased to learn the two centres have been operating smoothly and progressing steadily in their drug research and trials since starting their operation in early 2014.

They were also pursuing the accreditation of the China Food & Drug Administration to become nationally recognised centres for new drug development with a view to attracting international pharmaceutical companies and overseas investment to Hong Kong, he noted.
