7 MERS cases reported

The Centre for Health Protection is monitoring one newly reported Middle East Respiratory Syndrome cases in Korea and six cases in Saudi Arabia.

 

In Korea, the patient is a doctor working at Samsung Medical Centre, whose source of infection is under investigation.

 

The six Saudi cases involve three men and three women, aged 40 to 65. One patient is a relative of a confirmed case, one is a healthcare worker while two other patients had visited healthcare facilities with MERS outbreaks. The remaining two patients' history of exposure to known risk factors in the 14 days prior to the onset of symptoms is under investigation.

 

In addition, a previously confirmed patient died.

 

To date, Korea has reported 184 MERS cases, in which 33 died. Another case was exported from Korea to the Mainland.

 

In addition to the laboratory-confirmed cases in Korea, 1,181 cases have been reported to the World Health Organisation globally, including at least 454 deaths.

 

The centre reminds people to avoid non-essential visits to healthcare facilities.

 

It will maintain close communication with the WHO and relevant health authorities.
