Aircraft water passes safety checks

June 29, 2015

The Department of Health announced today that no coliform bacteria was detected in water samples collected from Cathay Pacific Airways aircraft, while a trace amount of the bacteria was detected in two airport water tankers.

The department has been investigating the possible source of contamination after test results of water samples collected from Cathay aircraft were found to be unsatisfactory last week.

A total of 39 samples were collected from aircraft, airport water filling points and water tankers.

The department noted that the trace amount of coliform found in two samples was likely due to the "hygienic condition" of the water tankers.

The ground handling companies have suspended use of the two tankers and will conduct thorough cleansing and disinfection. Tests will be arranged after disinfection.

There is no evidence at present to suggest a contaminated water source at the airport's water filling points, the department said.

Cleansing and disinfection of water tanks in all 14 affected aircraft has been completed. The department is working closely with the airline to examine the water quality of the affected aircraft after disinfection.
