MERS contacts traced

May 30, 2015

The Centre for Health Protection has traced 29 close contacts and 17 other contacts of the Korean man with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome who exported the disease from Korea to Mainland China.

Among the 29 passengers who were classified as close contact sitting within two rows of the man onboard Asiana Airlines OZ 723 who travelled from Korea and arrived in Hong Kong at around 1pm on May 26, 18 are in Hong Kong.

They showed no symptoms, and have been quarantined at the Lady MacLehose Holiday Village.

The 17 other contacts have been put under medical surveillance.

The centre again appealled to passengers who were on the same flight or bus as the MERS patient to call the hotline, 2125 1111, for further assessment or follow-up. The hotline will operate till 6pm today and from 9am to 6pm tomorrow.

A 30-year-old local woman who had developed respiratory problems after she travelled to Dubai and rode a camel there has tested negative for the MERS Coronavirus, the centre said.

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man said two Koreans who earlier refused to be quarantined had finally accepted the arrangement, with assistance from the diplomatic personnel of South Korea in Hong Kong.

This was crucial, he said, as once they are in the quarantine camp, medical personnel from the Centre for Health Protection will be able to conduct a medical assessment.
