MERS suspect transits HK

May 28, 2015

The Centre for Health Protection is monitoring a suspected Middle East Respiratory Syndrome case involving a Korean man who travelled to the Mainland via Hong Kong.

The centre's Controller Dr Leung Ting-hung said the centre is liaising with Mainland and Korean authorities and the World Health Organisation to follow-up on the case.

The 44-year-old man, now hospitalised in Guangdong, flew to Hong Kong on May 26 and then travelled to the Mainland by bus from the airport.

He has been tested for the virus and the result is pending.

He had a fever and cough when arriving in Hong Kong, but he did not reveal his contact history with confirmed MERS patients to health officers, Dr Leung said.

The centre is now gathering information on the other passengers on the flight and bus.

If the case is confirmed, follow-up measures, such as contact tracing, will be conducted immediately, Dr Leung added.

The centre has set up a hotline (2125 1111) to answer related enquiries. Passengers on the flight and bus should also call the number.
