The Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service is seeking more blood supply to meet rising demand.
Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man told legislators today the overall number of blood donations has increased from 244,594 in 2012 to 254,053 last year.
However, demand for blood supply is expected to be on a continuous rise as a result of an ageing population, and that the Red Cross urgently needs more people to donate blood to help maintain a stable and sufficient supply.
Its initiatives include enhancing publicity to educate the public on saving lives by donating blood, and establishing campus blood donor centres in collaboration with the University of Hong Kong and Polytechnic University.
The new West Kowloon Donor Centre will open at the end of the year.
