Acting Chief Executive Carrie Lam officiated at the 5th Hong Kong Games opening ceremony, attended by more than 7,500 at the Hong Kong Coliseum in Hung Hom tonight.

Addressing the ceremony, Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing said that more than 3,200 athletes from 18 districts will compete in eight sports competitions: athletics, badminton, basketball, futsal, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.

He urged people to show up at the competitions to cheer for the athletes.

During the ceremony, eight elite athletes representing the Games' eight sports led the competitors representing the 18 districts into the Coliseum.

A Yuen Long athlete, who was overall champion at the last Games, took an oath on behalf of all the participating athletes. The oath was followed by a cauldron lighting ceremony.

The games is a territory-wide major multi-sport event held biennially since 2007, with all 18 districts competing for honours.

The competitions are free to spectators.
