Sting alert

Sting alert:  Ko Wing-man (second left) talks with District Council chairmen on enhancing anti-mosquito measures.

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man met with the Chairmen and Vice-chairmen of the 18 District Councils today to appeal for their support in anti-mosquito work to prevent Dengue fever.

Dr Ko said at the meeting that as no vaccine for Dengue fever is available, the best preventive measures are to avoid mosquito bites and prevent mosquito breeding.

Attendees agreed to attach importance to eliminating mosquito breeding, and to co-operate with government departments in anti-mosquito work.

To prepare for the upcoming rainy season, Dr Ko noted the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department will deploy additional manpower for anti-mosquito work.

From May to early June, the department will step up efforts in killing adult mosquitoes, clearing stagnant water and cutting grass to eliminate potential mosquito breeding grounds, he said.

In addition to its own staff, the department's contractors will provide more than 200 teams of workers to perform mosquito control and preventive work all over Hong Kong. Additional funding will be provided.

It will also strengthen education and publicity programmes to enhance public understanding of the disease and the importance of mosquito control work.
