Dengue fever meeting held

April 20, 2015

Centre for Health Protection Controller Dr Leung Ting-hung attended a meeting in Shenzhen today with Guangdong and Shenzhen officials on the prevention and control of Dengue fever and other acute infectious diseases.

Speaking to the media after he returned to Hong Kong this afternoon, Dr Leung said the risk of more imported Dengue fever cases and local transmission of the disease is high.

He noted Dengue activity remains high in neighbouring areas, including popular tourist attractions in Southeast Asia. Locally, the coming long period of warm weather is favourable for the breeding of the vector.

The number of cases in Guangdong rose from 2,894 last year to 45,189 in 2013, with the majority of cases in Guangzhou. Locally, 23 imported cases have been recorded so far this year, while there were three local and 108 imported cases in 2014.

Dr Leung said the Government is concerned about the three local cases and, following the recommendations of the Scientific Committee on Vector-borne Diseases, has stepped up public education on anti-mosquito measures.

The Food & Health Bureau will hold a meeting this week to co-ordinate government departments' anti-mosquito work, he added.
