Insufficient Hep-A, berry evidence

April 15, 2015

A Centre for Health Protection investigation has not found sufficient evidence linking the increase of hepatitis A cases with the eating of blueberries.

The centre said 64 hepatitis A cases have been recorded so far this year. All patients are in stable condition and no death was recorded.

Only 19 cases involved the consumption of berries. Only eight involved blueberries.

Hepatitis A is a statutory notifiable infectious disease in Hong Kong, and the centre will carry out investigations for every case to understand whether the patients had consumed high risk-foods like shellfish and berries during the incubation period, and will implement appropriate preventive and control measures.
