Powdered formula supply sufficient

April 15, 2015

Regular surveys show powdered formula supply at local retail stores was relatively sufficient when compared to the situation in early 2013, Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man told lawmakers today.

Two popular powdered formula brands’ supply also improved slightly in 2014, but there is still a some degree of shortage in individual districts.

The Government has shared these survey results with suppliers, urging them to ensure stable and sufficient powdered formula supply for local infants and young children.

Suppliers were also encouraged to promote various pre-order services, which can create a dedicated supply chain for local infants and young children, separating local demand from non-local demand.

Suppliers also pledged that pre-ordered formula would be supplied within three working days of confirmation, and they will respond to all customer calls within 24 hours.

The surveys also showed that formula prices remained stable in major chain stores and pharmacies. Major chain stores’ retail prices were more or less the same as the suppliers' recommended retail prices, while pharmacies’ average retail prices were close to or lower than those in major chain stores.

There were 730 convictions for breaching formula export-control laws in the first two months of this year, and 5,103 in all of last year.
