Healthy diet:  Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man (centre), Director of Health Dr Constance Chan (third left) and Centre for Health Protection Controller Dr Leung Ting-hung (third right) officiate at the launch ceremony.

The Joyful Fruit Month event organised by the Department of Health is collaborating with the EatSmart Restaurant campaign for the first time this year to encourage the public to make eating fruit a habit.

To expand the Joyful Fruit Month event from schools to the community level, a coupon promotion activity will be held.

All students in schools participating in the event will be given two special coupons. When they and their family members visit designated EatSmart restaurants and order any EatSmart dish, they will be given a free serving of fruit upon presenting the coupon.

Officiating at the launch ceremony today, Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man said more than 500,000 students from more than 1,300 schools are participating in the Joyful Fruit Month event this year. A record high.

Also speaking at the ceremony, Director of Health Constance Chan said: "More than 70 EatSmart Restaurants are participating in the coupon promotion activity and it has received a very positive response."

According to a study conducted by the department in 2014, over 80% of the public do not consume a sufficient amount of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis.

To help the public pick an EatSmart Restaurant, the department has launched the Android version of the EatSmart Restaurant mobile app. The iOS version will also be available soon.
