Cheering contest promotes HK games

March 29, 2015

Cheerleaders from the 18 districts performed in the 5th Hong Kong Games cheering team competition today, to promote the games and encourage public participation in related activities.

Speaking at the event at Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park Sports Centre in Sai Ying Pun, 5th Hong Kong Games Organising Committee Chairman William Tong urged residents to support the district athletes who will compete in the biennial games.

Today’s cheering contest offered awards for best performance, for best local characteristic, and for popularity. A judging panel with representatives from the Community Sports Committee, the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, and the Cheerleading Federation of Hong Kong, China decides the first two awards. Spectators decide the popularity award.

The results will be announced at a prize presentation ceremony at the 5th Hong Kong Games closing ceremony on May 31.

The district cheering teams will perform at the games’ opening ceremony at the Hong Kong Coliseum on April 25. Free admission tickets will be distributed at the Leisure & Cultural Services Department’s District Leisure Services Offices from April 10. The cheering teams will also cheer for their athletes at the sports competitions which will take place from April 25 to May 31.

More than 3,200 district athletes will take part in eight competitions: athletics, badminton, basketball, futsal, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.

In related activities, members of the public can vote for their favourite sporty district and guess the games’ overall champion. Entry forms are available at the district leisure services offices and department sports centres. Participants can also vote online.

A games photo contest also invites submissions of photos of the sports competitions and related events, either through the dedicated website, or to the Leisure & Cultural Services department through mail or in person. The deadline is June 8.
