Tainted baby porridge recalled

December 13, 2014

The Centre for Food Safety today urged parents not to feed infants and toddlers with four kinds of pre-packed organic baby millet and three-grain porridge of Swiss brand, Holle, as they might be contaminated with atropine.

The centre asked the trade to stop selling the products, regardless of batches. The four Holle brand products are Organic Millet Porridge Apple - Pear, Organic Millet Porridge with Rice, Organic Milk Cereal with Millet, and Organic 3-Grain Porridge. All are from Switzerland and in 250g packages.

The centre received notification from the European Commission's Rapid Alert System for Food & Feed that Holle Baby Food GmbH has initiated a recall of certain batches of five kinds of baby porridge (including the above four) as the products were detected with atropine exceeding the maximum permitted level.

According to the notification, some of the affected products were exported to Hong Kong.

The centre has contacted the major importer of the products in Hong Kong who agreed to initiate a recall.

With regard to the fifth product mentioned in the notification, Millet & Rice Whole Wheat Porridge, the centre has conducted checks on major local retail outlets and did not find the product.

Consumption of the aforesaid products contaminated with atropine may cause short-term adverse effects, such as dilated pupils, dryness of the mouth, constipation, urinary retention, and flushed skin. The chemicals present will be excreted from the body and therefore there are no long term health effects.

Medical advice should be sought if anyone feel sick after consuming the product.

Call the importer at 3188 2463 for enquiries about the recall.
