CS chairs poverty meeting

December 12, 2014

Chief Secretary Carrie Lam chaired the first meeting of the Commission on Poverty's second term today.

Members discussed the poverty situation of disabled people in Hong Kong last year, a new Community Care Fund assistance programme and retirement protection.

Adopting the poverty line's analytical framework, the Government Economist and Census & Statistics Department conducted a detailed analysis on the poverty situation of disabled people in Hong Kong last year.

Members took note of the findings and gave views on support measures for the disabled. They also raised some issues for further study. The Special Needs Groups Task Force will follow up on the discussions and explore the feasibility of the suggested measures.

The commission also agreed to expand the "Elderly Dental Assistance Programme" to benefit more needy seniors with the dental service subsidy.

The programme will first cover Old Age Living Allowance recipients aged 80 or above, and gradually expand to other age groups.

Amounting to around $805.14 million, the programme is expected to start in the second half of next year and will last for three years.

The commission also continued to discuss detailed arrangements for the retirement protection public consultation, and noted that the Government would set the way forward in the next Policy Address after considering the commission's views.
