Trade urged to ensure stable formula supply

November 26, 2014

The Food & Health Bureau has urged the trade to ensure sufficient supply of powdered formula for local infants and young children during the peak demand period in the run-up to Christmas and Lunar New Year.

A consultant firm the bureau commissioned to survey the supply and prices of powdered formula from late June to early November found that Friso products were in short supply between June and August.

While the situation improved from September, the firm found a serious shortage of Friso Stage 3 products in Yuen Long and Sha Tin at the end of October and early November.

The other brand covered, Mead Johnson, has had a stable supply.

The surveys found no retail price fluctuations in major chain stores and pharmacies.

The survey results have been submitted to the Committee on Supply Chain of Powdered Formula to seek its views on how to improve the supply chain.
