Excessive pesticide found in vegetable

November 20, 2014

The Centre for Food Safety has found excessive pesticide residues in a baby Shanghai green sample imported from the Mainland.

It was found to contain Methamidophos at a level of 0.33 ppm which is 6.6 times the legal limit.

Based on the level of pesticides found in the sample, eating a normal amount of the vegetable would not cause adverse health effects.

Since the Pesticide Residues in Food Regulation came into effect on August 1, the centre has tested 7,900 food samples for pesticide residues. A total of 25 vegetable samples - including today's baby Shanghai green sample - contained excessive amounts of pesticide.

The overall unsatisfactory rate is less than 0.4%.
