Beef sample fails safety test

November 20, 2014

The Centre for Food Safety has detected illicit preservative sulphur dioxide in a sample of fresh beef taken from a stall at Shui Wo Street Market in Kwun Tong.

It was found to contain sulphur dioxide - a preservative not permitted in fresh meat - at a level of 15 parts per million.

The centre has informed the vendor of the result and will take follow-up tests to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.

It reminded traders not to sell fresh or chilled meat containing sulphur dioxide, and encouraged consumers to buy meat from reliable market stalls and fresh provision shops.
