British, Dutch poultry banned

November 18, 2014

The Centre for Food Safety has banned the import of poultry products, including eggs, from East Riding, Yorkshire, in the UK and Oudewater in the Netherlands.

The decision was made after the centre was notified by the World Organisation for Animal Health about an outbreak of H5 avian influenza in poultry farms in the two areas.

About 15,000 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and 4.8 million poultry eggs were imported from the UK to Hong Kong last year, while 18,000 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and 14.3 million poultry eggs were imported from the Netherlands.

The centre has contacted British and Dutch authorities and will closely monitor the situation.
