The Department of Health has ordered the recall of proprietary Chinese herbal tablets Great Wall Brand Ching Fei Yi Huo Pien, which have been found to contain a trace amount of an undeclared Western drug paracetamol.
The product is used for treatment of cough and sore throat.
The department today instructed the registered holder Ming Wah Co to recall the products, which were manufactured and packed into specifications of 60 and 96 tablets on the Mainland.
It noted that paracetamol has long been commonly used for its anti-pyretic and analgesic effects. Inappropriate use of paracetamol can cause liver and kidney damage.
No adverse reports have been received so far and the department has instructed the recall as a precautionary measure.
It urged people who feel unwell after taking the product to stop using it and seek a doctor’s advice.
