Proper antibiotic use pledged

November 17, 2014

Professional pledge

Professional pledge:  Dr Ko Wing-man (fourth right) leads healthcare professionals in signing an “I Pledge” to support the responsible use of antibiotics.

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man today led healthcare professionals in signing an “I Pledge” to support the responsible use of antibiotics to combat drug resistance and promote Antibiotic Awareness Day tomorrow.

He told the media antimicrobial resistance is a major global public health threat. Even last-resort antibiotics are becoming ineffective at combating common bacteria.

Some patients do not realise the importance of completing a whole course of antibiotics, he said, so the private and public healthcare sector is making the pledge to educate them on the appropriate use of antibiotics.

Proper hand hygiene is also emphasised as it remains one of the most effective, yet simplest, means of reducing infection transmission.
