October 31, 2014
High alert

High alert:  Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man meets with officials to review measures to combat Dengue fever.

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man today meet with officials to review measures to combat Dengue fever.

Dr Ko was briefed by officials from the Department of Health and the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department on the progress of the latest anti-mosquito work and enhanced Dengue fever surveillance.

Noting that there had been an upsurge in Dengue fever cases in Guangdong and the disease’ activity remained high in Taiwan and Southeast Asia since September, Dr Ko said the disease continues to pose a threat to Hong Kong.

"As Hong Kong also recorded a local Dengue fever case last week, the Government has adopted a series of mosquito prevention and control measures to minimise the risk of outbreak," he said, adding that the Government and the public should not let their guard down.

He reminded people to eliminate pockets of stagnant water that serve as breeding sites for mosquitoes, and take necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
