Oil safety laws planned

October 29, 2014

The Food & Health Bureau is considering forming regulations to ensure edible oil safety by requiring importers, sellers and producers to provide an official certificate issued by the place of origin for inspection.

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man told lawmakers today the bureau will make reference to the practices adopted in implementing the Imported Game, Meat & Poultry Regulations under the Public Health & Municipal Services Ordinance.

According to these laws, all imported raw meat must be officially certified to prove it is fit for human consumption.

He said details of the proposals must be discussed with other departments, and international practices will also be considered.

He said he hopes to hold a public consultation on the legislative proposals early next year.
