Woman with streptococcus dies

The Centre for Health Protection is investigating the death of 92-year-old woman infected with Streptococcus suis, a type of bacteria isolated from pigs.

 

The patient, with underlying illnesses, fell ill on October 20. She was admitted to Caritas Medical Centre on October 22 and died the same day.

 

She tested positive for Streptococcus suis.

 

She had handled raw pork during the incubation period.

 

She had no recent travel history and her home contact is asymptomatic.

 

The case has been referred to the Coroner's Court.
