Illicit preservative found in beef

October 24, 2014

A sample of fresh beef was found to contain sulphur dioxide, failing Centre of Food Safety tests. Prosecution will be taken against the vendor concerned.

The sample was taken from a fresh provision shop at a market in Sha Tin and it was found to contain sulphur dioxide, a preservative not permitted in fresh meat, at a level of 1,800 parts per million.

The centre has informed the vendor concerned of the result.
