Medical exchange:  Dr Ko Wing-man (centre), Dr Constance Chan (second right) and Dr Leung Ting-hung (first left), together with other guests officiated at the symposium.

To marks its 10th anniversary, the Centre for Health Protection opened an Asia-Pacific health practitioners forum today to exchange views on disease prevention and control.

Officiating at the opening ceremony, Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man said the centre was set up in 2004 with an aim of achieving effective disease prevention and control in Hong Kong in collaboration with local and international partners.

Throughout the years, the centre has earned its name as a key public health protection agency, he said.

Dr Ko noted that in recent years, the city has faced the constant threat of new infectious diseases. He said the centre has played an important role in preventing the spread of these infections in Hong Kong.

The symposium addresses topics including climate change and human health, air pollution, antimicrobial resistance, vaccines, avian flu, childhood obesity, mental health, cancer and non-communicable disease control.

During the two-day forum, 10 sessions will be held in which more than 20 distinguished experts will speak on a wide range of subjects. About 700 people are taking part.

Also present at the opening ceremony were Director of Health Dr Constance Chan, Centre for Health Protection Controller Dr Leung Ting-hung and Deputy Director-General of the National Health & Family Planning Commission's Health Emergency Response Office Dr Wang Wenjie.
