82 Dengue fever cases reported

October 17, 2014

As of October 16, there were 82 confirmed cases of Dengue fever in Hong Kong, all of which were imported, the Centre for Health Protection announced today.

Six new cases were reported from October 10 to 16, involving patients who had travelled to Guangzhou, Malaysia and India during the incubation period.

Health officials said Dengue fever activities in neighbouring areas remained at a high level.

Dengue fever is a common mosquito-borne disease. From 2004 to 2013, a total of 505 infections were recorded in Hong Kong – there were no deaths from the disease.

The centre reminded people that one of the best ways to avoid mosquito bites is to get rid of pockets of stagnant water that serve as breeding sites for mosquitoes.
