Gov't to regulate edible oil

September 17, 2014

Preliminary legislative proposals have been developed to govern the safety of edible oil and the recycling of used cooking oil.

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man and Secretary for the Environment KS Wong held an inter-departmental meeting today to discuss edible oil issues, and agreed to strengthen regulation and change the law to safeguard the city's food safety.

The Food & Health Bureau will make it a legal requirement that waste cooking oil, or oil not fit for human consumption, cannot be used as an ingredient for the production of edible oil - all of which must comply with the proposed legal standard.

Any person who imports, distributes or produces edible oil must also ensure the products comply with the legal requirements.

The Environmental Protection Department and the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department will monitor the recycling of local waste cooking oil.

The Government plans to launch a public consultation on the legislative proposals at the end of this year or early next year.
