Lard ban gazetted

September 14, 2014

The Government has gazetted an order under the Food Safety Ordinance banning the import and supply of lard and lard products from Taiwan’s Chang Guann company, made on or after March 1 this year.

Director of Food & Environmental Hygiene Vivian Lau told the media today the order also covers arrangements imposed on local importers, distributors and retailers on the recall and disposal of those products.

The order came into effect at noon today. Breaching of any terms of the order is a criminal offence, warranting up to 12-months’ jail and a $100,000 fine.

She said there are about 500 tonnes of the problematic products in Hong Kong and about one-tenth has been sealed so far.

Ms Lau appealed to local importers, distributors and retailers to stop using or supplying the products immediately and return them to their suppliers.
