Expo to promote rabies prevention

September 12, 2014

The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department will hold an exhibition at Statue Square, Central, on September 13 and 14, to mark World Rabies Day.

The expo will focus on responsible pet ownership and the importance of rabies prevention. Display panels will give advice on handling dogs in public places.

Rabies is a fatal disease that can be transmitted from infected dogs to humans through dog bites. More than 55,000 people, mostly in Africa and Asia, die of rabies every year.

The department has implemented a comprehensive anti-rabies programme. Under the Rabies Ordinance, all dogs aged over five months must be vaccinated against rabies, licensed and microchipped.

Currently, about 180,000 dogs with valid licences are vaccinated. Dogs must be re-vaccinated every three years when the dog licence is renewed. Offenders are liable to a maximum penalty of $10,000.
