The rodent infestation rate for the first half of this year was 3.6%, similar to last year's figure of 3.2%, the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department announced today.
The rates of all districts were below 10% and Sham Shui Po had the highest rate at 7.6%.
It said high rates are mainly caused by poor hygiene conditions, including the accumulation of waste, indiscriminate disposal of refuse and improper handling of food remnants, which provide shelter and food for rodents.
Although rodent infestation in public areas is under control as a whole, the department said it has boosted anti-rodent efforts, and encouraged businesses and residents to prevent and control rodents.
