Flu jab subsidy to rise

August 21, 2014

The subsidy for childhood and elderly influenza shots under the Vaccination Subsidy Schemes 2014-15 will rise from $130 to $160, the Centre for Health Protection announced today.

Children aged six months to less than six years old, and people aged 65 years or more, can receive subsidised vaccinations from doctors enrolled in the Government's vaccination subsidy schemes, from October 6.

The subsidy for eligible elderly people to receive pneumococcal vaccines from private doctors remains at $190.

Briefing the media today, Centre for Health Protection Controller Dr Leung Ting-hung said influenza vaccines are safe and effective.

"Influenza can cause serious illnesses in high-risk individuals and even healthy persons. Except for those with contraindications, influenza vaccination is suitable for all members of the public."

Dr Leung also noted that quadrivalent influenza vaccines, which offer more protection, will be adopted in the Government Vaccination Programme in the 2014-15 season.

The programme will start on November 3, providing free seasonal influenza vaccinations and pneumococcal vaccinations to eligible groups via public clinics and hospitals.
