Youngsters depart for space training

Thirty youngsters set off for a nine-day space training camp in Beijing and Jiuquan at the Space Museum today.
Speaking at the send-off ceremony, Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing said this is the sixth time Hong Kong secondary students have been given the opportunity to learn about cosmological science and space technology, and to meet Chinese space experts and astronauts.
From August 2 to 10 the students will visit major space facilities, learn about space science and technology, and undergo astronaut training, including making rocket models, trying on spacesuits, psychological training, escape and survival training, and blood redistribution adaptability training.
They will take an examination and be awarded certificates after completing their training.
This year's programme started recruitment in May and saw an overwhelming response from 200 students in 129 schools.
Thirty students were selected after a quiz on astronomy and space science, a three-day pre-camp and an interview.
