The Government will consider the need to strengthen cooked meat regulations by requiring importers and retailers to provide import receipts within a reasonable time, Undersecretary for Food & Health Prof Sophia Chan says.
Speaking to reporters today, Prof Chan said cooked meat is regulated, and the Centre for Food Safety tests cooked meat during its regular surveillance exercises.
The public outcry over local imports of problematic food from Shanghai-based supplier Husi prompted the Government to consider strengthening cooked meat regulations, she added.
Speaking on McDonald’s import of foods from this supplier, Prof Chan said the centre has received McDonald’s food import receipts for the past 24 months.
She added the centre has suspended all Husi food imports, and will ban the sales of food already imported from the supplier to protect public health.
