The Architectural Services Department has arranged to have a Brachychiton rupestris tree removed from the slope of Hong Kong Park to ensure public safety.
The tree, listed as ARCHSD CW/48 on the Register of Old & Valuable Trees, was found to have been infected with several types of fungi causing severe trunk decay in May.
The department took remedial measures, including applying fungicide. The following test on July 21 showed the tree had not improved and its overall structural condition was poor.
After a joint Tree Management Office and Expert Panel on Tree Management site inspection on July 25, it was agreed the tree should be removed as soon as possible to protect the public.
