Hospital costs to rise to $169b

May 07, 2014

Hospital Authority Chief Executive Dr Leung Pak-yin predicts the body’s financial requirements for 2041-42 will reach $169 billion - 3.8 times more than in 2013-14.

Speaking at the authority’s annual convention today, Dr Leung said that by 2041 Hong Kong's population will have grown by 1.3 million to 8.5 million.

People over 65 years of age will increase to 30% of the population.

The average life expectancy for men and women will rise to 84 and 90 years.

About 18,000 new beds, 6,200 extra doctors, 24,000 more nurses, and 7,700 new allied health professionals are required to maintain a level of service that is comparable with that of today, he said.
